Summary
In chapter 20 we flash forward to Johann helping Meier clean up the bricks, he talks of Phillip and Christine, and how they were a family. We then flash forward to September morning 1944. We learn that Johann was injured during the bombing of Auschwitz and was then taken to Berlin for medical care. As a result of the injury Johann must undergo surgery on his hand. We soon learn that there was a mistake during surgery, and when Johann tries to open it, it stays closed, when he wants it closed it stays open. Also a very large and prominent swastika scar is now on the back of his hand. After he was released Johann explores Berlin and sees the damages of bombing. While on his way to receive a new assignment Johann is arrested for saying that he did not believe that Germany would win the war. After a day in a cell he is released and continues on his way.
